Background

After years of thinking the cheapest Shopify plan was saving money, some merchants discover that a more expensive plan can be cheaper overall. The reason is transaction math: higher plan fees can be offset by lower credit card and third party transaction rates.

Lite is listed here because its fee rates match Basic, but it does not include a store. In general, removing the store from a plan reduces the subscription by $20 per month.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Shopify plan calculator work?

It multiplies annual revenue by the credit card order percentage and third party payment percentage, applies each plan's listed fee rates, adds the annual subscription cost, then ranks plans by estimated annual cost.

Why can a more expensive Shopify plan be cheaper?

Higher Shopify plans can have lower credit card and third party transaction rates. At enough revenue, the fee savings can be larger than the extra monthly subscription cost.

Should the two payment percentages total 100%?

They can, but they do not have to. If some revenue has no listed Shopify credit card or third party transaction fee, leave that portion out. The calculator only requires the two inputs to total 100% or less.

Are Shopify plan prices and fees always current?

No. This calculator uses the plan pricing and fee assumptions listed on this page. Confirm current Shopify pricing before changing plans.

What does Lite mean here?

Lite is included as a no-store option with the same listed transaction rates as Basic. The background note explains that removing the store generally reduces the subscription by $20 per month.

Formula: annual subscription cost + credit card revenue x card rate + third party payment revenue x third party rate. Current displayed winner uses $6,648.00annual cost for Shopify.
